Dr Alan Nazha, founder and director of Sydney Pain Specialists, is a highly regarded Anaesthetist, Specialist Pain Management Physician, and Interventional Pain Physician, holding triple qualifications. Completing his anaesthetic training at Royal North Shore Hospital in 2011, Dr Nazha pursued subspecialty training in Pain Medicine at leading institutions such as the Michael J Cousins Pain Management and Research Centre, Royal North Shore Hospital, Concord Hospital, and Hunter Pain Specialists. His outstanding performance in the pain medicine fellowship examinations, where he emerged as the leading candidate, earned him a Merit listing. Subsequently, he attained the Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) from the World Institute of Pain.
Dr Nazha leads a team of pain specialist doctors, psychologists, and physiotherapists at Sydney Pain Specialists, dedicated to delivering holistic, personalised treatments for various pain conditions. They specialise in managing spinal and neuropathic pain using advanced interventional therapies. The cornerstone of their approach is the multidisciplinary biopsychosocial care model, where the team collaboratively develops comprehensive management plans that combine interventional procedures, medication management, and multidisciplinary therapy, ensuring a focused and unified approach to pain management.
Dr Nazha's diverse roles include serving as Chair of the Faculty of Pain Medicine NSW Regional Committee and Board Director of the Neuromodulation Society Australia and New Zealand. He also holds a key position in the Professional Services Review (PSR) scheme and is an active member of several professional societies including the International Neuromodulation Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience and American Interventional Headache Society. Further enhancing his credentials, Dr Nazha actively contributes to clinical research and trials through Sydney Pain Specialists, currently engaged in pioneering studies on advanced pain therapies. He is deeply involved in education, serving as an examiner for the Faculty of Pain Medicine and previously teaching at Sydney University SAH Clinical School and The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as an EMST (Emergency Management of Severe Trauma) instructor and examiner from 2011 to 2019. Dr Nazha also acts as a mentor in his field, providing guidance to other pain physicians, surgeons & radiologists interested in interventional pain therapies, medical students, and allied health professionals. He routinely hosts visiting clinicians in his clinics and operating theatre, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Dr Nazha has a special interest in the utilisation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation in the treatment of persistent post-surgical pain, neuropathic pain, CRPS as well as in interventional therapies for head, neck and facial pain.
Research
Dr Nazha is actively involved with pain research and is a subclinical investigator with Genesis Research Services. He was a sub clinical investigator in 2016 for the Phase 3 Multicentre RCT for the study of the analgesic efficacy and safety of a dose titration regimen for the subcutaneous administration of Tanezumab in subjects with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.
